Mustang GTD Spirit of America Celebrates American Innovation and Performance
In 1962, a small team embarked on a mission to transform a compact sedan into a high-performance sports car. Their creation, the Ford Mustang, made history by defeating Europe’s finest in its first race. Since then, the Mustang has continued to set new benchmarks, including becoming the first car from an American automaker to complete a lap of Germany’s legendary Nürburgring in under 7 minutes.
Now, Ford is celebrating this legacy and more with the introduction of the Mustang GTD Spirit of America.

Since its debut in 1965, the Mustang has been a symbol of American performance, known for its powerful V8 engine and the iconic galloping horse logo on a red, white, and blue badge. The Mustang GTD Spirit of America not only honors the Mustang’s performance history but also embodies the American spirit of innovation and determination.
The Spirit of America also pays homage to Craig Breedlove, an aerospace technician who, in the 1960s, broke the 500- and 600-mile-per-hour land speed barriers. His groundbreaking achievements in a sport dominated by European elites inspired generations of American engineers and designers, including those behind the Mustang GTD.
“Mustang GTD is the pinnacle of Mustang performance. The Spirit of America edition celebrates the audacity and daring behind that performance,” said Mustang GTD Brand Manager Jim Owens. “Without pioneers like Craig Breedlove, pushing the limits and challenging the giants of the day in a distinctly American way, the Mustang GTD wouldn’t exist.”
